Welcome to "Third Grade Book Adventures"!


Hi! My name is Jenny Malave-Battles. I'm a mother of three amazing kids: my sons Anthony and Adam and our daughter Juliet. I'm also a wife to my wonderful husband, Shawn. I am a third-grade Teacher of Record, and this is my senior year at Springfield College.

As a third-grade teacher, I want to create a space to share my love for reading with my students and inspire them with great books. Choosing a third-grade reading theme for this blog will help me better connect with my students.

Why Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters is a Classroom Favorite

One of my all-time favorite stories to read to students is Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. This beautifully illustrated African folktale captivates children from the moment we open the book. It's not just the stunning artwork that draws them in but also the timeless lessons woven into the story about kindness, character, and the true meaning of beauty. The story follows Mufaro and his two daughters, Nyasha and Manyara, who are both described as beautiful but possess very different personalities. While Manyara is selfish and bad-tempered, Nyasha is kind, humble, and selfless.
